After taking about 30 minutes and 2 beers each to figure out how to actually put the game pieces together, Settlers of Catan is a fun pastime. I used my entire college education:
- Created crafty deals and manipulated my fellow players to trade me 2 ore for one brick (when we know brick doesn’t have shit on sheep).
- Worked in a team like situation to alienate one player in order to make them feel unappreciated (loners want acceptance- see #1).
- Recalled planning skills - how many beers will it take to get through this game? (12).
- Basic addition was also necessary in this game focused on counting “the longest road” and summing up two dice (harder than it sounds).
- Successfully used the game “almanac index” to identify confusing terms like intersection, tactic, harbor, etc.
If only the Dean could see me now, he’d realize that when he put me on his list every quarter it actually paid off.
